On July 23, 2013, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Nan Far Woodworking and J.C. Penny Purchasing Corp., announced the voluntary recall of the popular Rockland Furniture round cribs due to the risk of infant strangulation and death. The popular cribs were sold exclusively at J.C. Penny stores in the United States, and on www.jcpenny.com, from January 2005 through December 2008.
The recall of the popular infant crib is due to the tendency of the crib’s drop-side rail to malfunction, detach or otherwise fail. When the drop-side rail malfunctions, it creates a small space where an infant can become wedged or entrapped, posing a significant risk of strangulation or suffocation. This defect creates a dangerous trap, which can suffocate and kill any innocent baby with the misfortune of being in the crib when it malfunctions
The model number targeted by this recall is 343-8314. Consumers can locate the model number printed on a label located on the inner-lower portion of the crib rail. It is estimated that 3,900 defective units were sold at J.C. Penny stores during this time frame.
Consumers are urged to stop using the cribs immediately and contact Rockland Furniture at (877) 967-5770 or www.rocklandimmobilizationkit.com for a free repair kit. The repair kit is designed to immobilize the drop-side rail. Until the crib is safely repaired, consumers should not permit an infant to sleep in the crib.
As a parent, child safety advocate, and trial lawyer, I am continually troubled by the fact that manufacturers and retailers continue to sell dangerous products. Manufacturers, in their zeal to get products on the market, often cut corners and overlook safety when designing and manufacturing products. Manufacturers have an obligation and opportunity to thoroughly assess product safety before the launch of a product. It should not take a child to get injured or killed for a manufacturer to make a product safe.
