On April 24, 2013, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Target Corp. of Minneapolis, Minnesota, announced the voluntary recall of the popular Giada DeLaurentiis-branded ceramic lasagna pans due to serious laceration hazard posed by usage. Target has received 39 reports of the ceramic pan or its handles breaking and cracking during normal use. Cuts and lacerations were reported in at least six of those incidents.
The cream colored pans measure 9 x 13 inches and were sold both individually and as part of six-piece set by Target stores nationwide and online from January 2009 through October 2012. Target estimates that 148,700 of these defective pans were sold during this time span. The bottom of each ceramic lasagna pan is labeled “Giada De Laurentiis for Target.”
Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled pans and return them to any Target store for a full refund. Target customer service is available at (800) 440-0680 or online at www.target.com under the Product Recalls tab located at the bottom of the page.
As consumer safety advocate and trial lawyer, I am continually troubled by the fact that manufacturers continue to sell products that endanger the lives of people. Manufacturers, in their zeal to get products on the market, often cut corners and overlook safety when designing and manufacturing products. Manufacturers have an obligation and opportunity to thoroughly assess product safety before the launch of a product. It should not take incidents like this for a manufacturer to make a product safe.
